AI is transforming the way we operate in virtually every industry with entrepreneurs already using AI for an impressive list of tasks, including:

  • Text generation,
  • Customer support and customer experience,
  • Code generation,
  • Image and video generation and more…

…and the rate of adoption is likely to continue to increase.

In fact, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that between the year ending 30 June 2020 and 30 June 2022, there has been an increase of more than 16% in the number of businesses using Information and Communication Technologies to deliver their product or service, and it is reasonable to expect that this will have increased again in the data for the 2023 financial year.

In today’s blog, let’s explore the evolving landscape of writing, the role of AI, and how as women entrepreneurs, we can harness this technology to enhance, rather than replace, our creative efforts with my 5 Top Tips.

Writing for Purpose

If you are writing ‘for purpose’, whether you are a leadership coach and consultant or offering B2B or B2C services, you will already be familiar with the importance of using storytelling in your content and writing.

This will not change as AI continues to develop and improve, however, with AI advancing at a remarkable pace, it’s natural to wonder if machines can replicate the vital aspects of writing like: Authenticity, Emotion, Imagination, Originality and Universality.

(See what I did there, AEIOU!?).

AI can generate content, assist with editing, and even produce news articles. However, while the technology mimics the elements of writing, it lacks the crucial human element which is the key to mastering your message, and remaining a credible source for Search Engines.

How Female Entrepreneurs Can Embrace AI

 

As female entrepreneurs who value the art of writing for purpose or for legacy, we don’t have to fear AI; we can leverage it to increase efficiencies in delivering impactful content marketing strategies.

There are many ways to use AI, including:

Content Generation

You can use AI tools to generate content ideas, but always take time to infuse your unique voice and perspective to ensure the piece is original, compelling and that it speaks to your audience.

Editing Assistance

AI can help with grammar and style, but only ever rely on it as a tool to enhance your work, it is no substitute for human editing.

Data-Driven Insights

Try using AI to provide valuable data on reader preferences and customer avatar development.

Collaboration

Collaborate with AI to streamline routine tasks, freeing up your time for more creative endeavours.

Experimentation

Combine technology with your imagination for powerful results. 

…okay, but how can you write ‘for purpose’ content, using AI?

As a copywriter, I have embraced AI as a teammate or an trainee.

A resource to gather ideas to be explored, considered and then created.

If you are dipping your toe in the AI pond, take a look at my 5 Top Tips below to help you with writing effective prompts.

 

Tip #1: Prompt with clarity

When providing prompts to an AI writing tool, it’s crucial to be clear and specific about your objectives.

Clearly define the purpose of the content, whether it’s crafting product descriptions, engaging social media posts, or informative blog articles. Be sure to include important details such as target audience demographics, the desired tone, specific call-to-action, and any relevant keywords or phrases.

The more specific and concise your prompts are, the better AI can understand and generate content that aligns with your goals.

Consider the purpose, the ideal word count, the platform and don’t rely solely on AI; make it a collaborative effort for the best results. Let’s take a look at an example of a generic prompt and a more specific prompt to illustrate.

In this example, I’m using OpenAI’s ChatGPT. When you read the result, you will see that the AI has returned exactly what I asked for (remember the good old saying, ‘garbage in, garbage out’?).

Write a Facebook post to advertise shaving cream for men.

You can see that this post is generic and unlikely to connect with any audience; however, it illustrates the way the prompt interacts with the language-model, helping you to build your prompts more effectively.

Prompt 2

Write a Facebook post to advertise a brand new Australian-made organic shaving cream for men. The target audience is women whose husbands use traditional, chemical filled products. The target audience is concerned about the health of their husbands, and the environment. The brand, OrgaShave, embraces modern environmental standards and will reinvests $1 in tree planting for every bottle sold during the month of August.

This response also requires significant editing to be truly compelling, but it is a worthy starting point. By introducing specificity, you can shift the dial on how much editing is required.

When you start experimenting, you will learn what works and what does not.

Sometimes, you just need to exit from the chat and start afresh…believe me, I’ve already been down a few rabbit-holes with ChatGPT!

Tip #2: Prompt for your brand’s (or your) voice

Maintaining consistency in your brand voice and tone is vital across all your content and is a crucial part of mastering your message.

When utilising AI, provide prompts that clearly outline your personality and style. Whether you want your copy to be playful, professional, or informative, express these characteristics in your prompts.

Consider including examples of previous content or preferred writing styles in your prompt. This will help the AI to understand your brand voice effectively.

To assist with this, and to avoid needing to establish ‘voice’ in every prompt, OpenAI recently released custom instructions for ChatGPT. There’s a useful article by Descript available here which explains the new technology well.

Note: when prompting with your own content, take a moment to ensure that there is nothing in the copy that you would not want to share. Anything entered is fair game and may be learnt from to train the language model to create future outputs.

 

Tip #3: Prompt for storytelling

Effective content creation, and writing for purpose, is all about connecting with your audience on a personal level. Your message matters and your stories are a vehicle to ensure the message is received, understood and remembered by your audience.

AI can assist in crafting copy that resonates with your target audience if you prompt for the use of evocative language tools in your prompts, such as incorporating storytelling elements, addressing pain points or desires, and leveraging persuasive language.

By guiding AI to create emotionally engaging content, you can create a first draft that leads to captivating your readers and inspiring them to take desired actions. However, I would urge caution here again.

As you are writing for purpose, it may be more beneficial to prompt the AI to provide some ideas for messaging which you can write in your voice, with your stories, as opposed to prompting it to create the content.

Tip #4 Prompt for adaptability

This is a very handy use of generative AI tools (and one of my favourite tips!).

The AI can generate multiple variations of content based on a given prompt, which can significantly boost your efficiency and effectiveness when you set about your content creation.

For example, try prompting with existing content from your blog, website or social pages, and request that the AI provides a series of 5 social media posts, or potential podcast topics, for example.

If you have an existing library of content, this will create significant efficiencies in your workflow.

Tip #5 Review, edit and improve

While AI significantly speeds up the brainstorming process, human editing and review cannot be avoided.

AI-generated copy should be used as a starting point or a source of inspiration, but the content will always require fine tuning – especially for women in business who are writing for purpose.

Once you get started you will see that the AI is brilliant at (very) quickly creating a baseline of content, but the human touch cannot be replaced.

There is real value in your creativity, your insights and intuition and, of course, your innate knowledge of the context and nuances of your business.

Further, it is imperative that you embed a detailed review process in your content creation.

The AI will make claims that must be first verified, and second referenced. There are times when the claims simply are not true and, as attractive as they might be, must be avoided.

While the new technology has significant benefits and potential time savings, I predict that to rely on it for ‘audience-ready’ content is to risk the expedited disengagement of your audience. Already, there is a proliferation of content that quite obviously lacks the human touch; this at a time when the audience is becoming more discerning, and businesses are embracing content marketing.

It creates almost a perfect storm where brands built on credible human expertise and engagement risk eroding that trust in the whirlwind of words that can be spun out of the new technology.

Embrace the Technology & Share Your Message

So, while AI is shaking up the writing landscape, the essence of storytelling and writing to share your purpose, remains uniquely human.

As female entrepreneurs, we have the opportunity to blend the power of AI with our creative prowess, ensuring that we continue to write for legacy in an ever-evolving digital world.

So, will AEIOU be replaced by AI, IOU?

In my opinion, no.

It will assist, it will improve your efficiency, and it will be your ultimate free (or inexpensive) team mate when you need some ideas or inspiration. However, it will be your creativity, your authenticity, and your insight that ensures your writing truly connects with your audience.

I encourage all women in business to embrace the future, and allow your words to continue to inspire, engage, and connect with your audiences.
